Pack a Tornado Survival Kit Now

!±8± Pack a Tornado Survival Kit Now

Unlike hurricanes, where we often have days to get ready, tornadoes can develop in just minutes when conditions are right.

When the tornado warning sirens sound you won't have time to "get prepared." You will want to have your tornado survival preparations all done in advance so you can head straight for your shelter.

The most important thing you can do in advance of a tornado is to identify where you will wait out the storm. When you have identified the safest place in your home, put together a "twister kit" that you can store right there. If you have a basic tornado bag stored in your safe place you won't have to take precious time gathering necessary supplies before you take cover. This could save your life if a fast-moving tornado is headed in your direction.

If you have one, a backpack makes an excellent container for your emergency supplies. If you don't have a backpack, a nylon duffel with sturdy handles will work.

What You Should Pack in Your Tornado Survival Kit

1. Light. If a tornado strikes you should count on losing electricity. Waiting out a storm in a pitch black room is much more frightening, especially for children. In the aftermath, even if your home is untouched, you might find yourself without power. You will need light.

Pack a flashlight for each member of the family. Store the batteries separately in sealed plastic bags so they will be fresh when you need them. Throw in a few bendable light sticks, which can glow for hours, and you will have illumination when and where you need it. Stock up on these at Halloween. They can sometimes be hard to find at other times of the year.

If your home or neighborhood has been struck you should assume that gas lines have been broken. It is not safe to use anything powered by a flame for light or heat. Avoid candles or lanterns.

2. A small portable emergency weather radio. You may not be able to hear storm warnings in your safe room, and you will certainly want to know when the danger has passed. Store batteries separately. A crank emergency weather radio that doesn't require any other power source is always a good choice.

3. Blankets for warmth and protection from flying glass and debris. Pack one or two blankets large enough to cover everyone.

4. Water. One or two small bottles of water for each person. Avoid large gallon containers as they are too hard to pack and too heavy to carry. Smaller bottles can be tucked into nooks and crannies in your backpack or tote. If you have pets, pack one additional bottle of water for each along with a small collapsible cup they can drink from.

5. Emergency food. You will want enough food to keep you and your loved ones going for 24 hours. Granola bars, crackers, peanut butter, dried fruit, cookies, hard candy, and don't forget bottles and formula if you have a baby. Throw in a foil packet of pet food for each animal. Avoid canned goods as they are heavy. In an emergency you should be more interested in concentrated calories and energy than with vitamins and a balanced diet.

6. A mini first aid kit with several sizes of adhesive bandages, gauze pads, a long roll of gauze, antibacterial ointment and a small bottle of over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol).

7. A quality all-in-one tool that has a screwdriver, pliers, a wire cutter and a sharp blade.

8. An old pair of shoes for each member of the family. If you are awakened in the middle of the night you may not have time to look for and put on shoes. If your home is struck, you do not want to walk through debris without foot protection.

9. A lightweight water-resistant windbreaker with a hood for each family member. Tornadoes are almost always accompanied by heavy rain. If your shelter is breached you will want rain protection that will also help to keep you warm.

10. A very loud whistle. Should your home be seriously damaged, blowing a loud whistle will help alert rescue workers to your location.

Store your emergency tornado bag in your safe area in such a way that you can locate it quickly and easily in the dark. Next to your bag store a fire extinguisher that you know how to use. Fires are a high risk after a tornado because of ruptured gas lines. You do not want to be trapped in a safe room without the means to extinguish a fire.

If you hear the "take cover" warning, grab your children, your pets, and your cell phone in that order, and take cover in your safe area until you know that it is definitely safe to come out. Do not make the mistake of going outside or to a window to see if the warning is "real."

Silk Screening Past to Present - From Ancient Japanese Silk to Bumper Stickers

!±8± Silk Screening Past to Present - From Ancient Japanese Silk to Bumper Stickers

The origins of printing are lost to history; some credit the Egyptians, or the Greeks. The earliest example of printing on record is the Chinese book known as the "Diamond Sutra" from 868 CE (Christian era.) Silk screen printing is the legacy of the Japanese form of stencil printing known as Katazome. Silk screening, also known as serigraph is a process that was patented by an Englishman called Samuel Simon. An American by the name of John Pilsworth took the process a step further in San Francisco, California by applying multiple colors and patenting this variation in 1914. It was during the First World War that screen printing began being used in an industrial capacity for producing flags, banners and advertisements. By this time there was the advent of photographic stencils which offered more adaptability and accessibility. Silk screening grew in popularity and became widely used for printing textiles, t-shirts and custom sticker printing. Screen printing has even been used in pop art, most notably by Andy Warhol.

The process of screen printing is simple, and depending on the desired effect, there are number of ways to produce an image. Originally silk screening was done with silk; this material was stretched taught over a frame. Since the 1940's synthetic materials like nylon and polyester have become the standard due to their low cost. The screen is then laid over the print surface; this may consist of cloth, paper, or some other material. In its simplest form, screen printing uses a stencil on top of the screen; ink is applied and then pushed through the screen and the stencil onto the substrate using a squeegee, thus producing an image. Another method is to use a light sensitive emulsion applied to the screen itself which creates impermeable areas through which ink cannot pass, in effect making the screen and the stencil one. The same process to apply the ink is still used regardless of what method is used to create the screen, the squeegee, or rubber blade pushes the ink through the screen to produce the image.

The silk screen method is inexpensive and easy to use, making it widely used in one form or another by multitudes of artists as well as companies. This method has been used for producing decals and stickers since the before the bumper sticker was even a true "sticker". It was a screen printer from Kansas City by the name of Forest P. Gill who created the modern custom stickers in the early 1930's. Silk screen printing is what has made what we all recognize as a sticker or decal what it is today. The legacy of the sticker will forever be tied to the process of silk screening. Silk screening gives the printer as much freedom to experiment as one could need, and at a low cost since there is no heavy equipment necessary. This is the ideal situation from which stickers of all variety began to be produced, and not just for commercial or political use, but for personal use as well. The basic format of creating a short message or clear symbol using one, two or four colors is perfectly suited to custom bumper stickers. This kind of inexpensive process allows for the kind of freedom of experimentation necessary when printing stickers, especially for stickers of a short run, or for producing variations in color of the same pattern.

For a process as simple as this to have a practical application on an industrial scale is not only what makes producing stickers for the masses possible, but for the masses to produce stickers on a small scale. The history that lives in the present in the form of the sticker is truly a marvel, the act of printing on silk, devised who knows how long ago, this ancient process that started in the Far East, taken to and developed in the West, is now a part of everyday life; to the point that people in every strata of society, business and conceivable niche have an outlet to express their message, to be seen and heard. This is what makes stickers and screen printing partners; as long as one exists, the other will have a place in the world.

Teacher Lanyards Bring Function and Fashion Into the Classroom

!±8± Teacher Lanyards Bring Function and Fashion Into the Classroom

The job of teaching consists of knowledge of your subject, good planning, organization, and a skill for presenting materials in age appropriate ways. It does not consist of going out of your way to look runway ready. That does not mean, however, that making strides to look great while in front of the classroom will not lead to increased confidence and even a better reception from students and staff. Regardless of the setting you are in, people will make snap judgments about you based on your appearance. While their assessment may not be the fairest or the most accurate, the point is that first impressions do matter. As a teacher, it is important to make a good first impression on parents, because the impression you make sets the tone for future interactions. It is important to set the right tone with students as well as these people need to cooperate with you on a daily basis and they do so largely based on their view of you as their teacher.

How do simple items like teacher lanyards help when it comes to making good impressions? Part of the answer is that they simply make a teacher feel great. When a teacher feels good, they give their best. Teacher lanyards are essentially the same thing as badge lanyards one would see just about any professional wearing these days. Badge lanyards hold employee identification, electronic keys and so on. Since teachers wear employee identification, electronic keys or keys to their classroom on a regular basis, teacher lanyards are a part of their standard wardrobe. By wearing this handy tool around your neck, you create more convenience and organization for yourself as you go about your day.

The type of lanyard worn can either enhance or detract from your overall appearance. This is where great teacher lanyards come into play. Whether the school year is just beginning or it is well under way, a new lanyard can improve a teacher's look and show their sense of style. The ultimate result is a better first impression, not to mention how looking good makes a teacher feel. Badge lanyards are necessary in many cases, especially for teachers. So have some fun with this tool that is a part of your work attire and use your lanyard to show off some style. Teacher lanyards come in a wide variety of styles ranging from ribbons to beads. Because a lanyard is a reasonably priced item, teachers can take the opportunity to start a collection of cheery or chic teacher lanyards. This way, they have many choices to go with their outfits all throughout the year.

A lanyard is a simple and functional tool both in the classroom and out. When this is a tool that is a large part of your daily routine, you can use it for its intended purpose but also take it to the full extent that it can go by choosing more than a nylon rope. With so many great styles of badge lanyards, there is something for everyone. It makes sense to choose a tool that will enhance your overall appearance when, as a teacher, you come into contact with so many people.

Sewing Patterns and Trouble-Free Tote Bags

!±8± Sewing Patterns and Trouble-Free Tote Bags

Sewing is a well-known craft that dates back to olden times. Its beginning stemmed from as early as the Paleolithic age. The advancement of sewing machines had made sewing procedures much quicker and simpler. There are various stitches and methods used.

Patterns are graphical sketches in a paper that will be basis for a sewing project. Sewing patterns are normally comprised of two elements:

1. The individual parts that make up the item
2. The instructions for fitting together the item.

Use a dressmaker chalk to transfer patterns onto cloth/fabric, or trace the pattern with a tracing wheel.

Three Methods of Making Patterns:

o The drafting pattern method entails sketching or outlining a pattern straight onto paper pattern with the use of lines and curves. This is common in sewing apparels.

o The draping pattern method is three dimensional. A fabric is actually draped onto a subject to see the actual flowing effect. This method is best for more decorative and intricate designs that a sketch can not capture.

o The flat pattern method starts with the crafting of a sloper. A sloper is a pattern for a tight skirt or fitted corsage or bodice customized to the measurements of the user. Slopers are often made of cardboards with no specified styles or seam allowances.

Here is an easy project to hone your sewing skills:

Tote Bags For Advertising - Seven Types to Promote Your Business

!±8± Tote Bags For Advertising - Seven Types to Promote Your Business

Tote bags are one of the most popular promotional products in the world. You can see them just about every place you look: walking down the street, going to the gym, buying groceries, visiting the library. They are extremely practical and versatile, which is why so many business owners choose to place their company logos on the side of one.

Besides being versatile, using tote bags to promote your business or organization has other benefits too. Tote bags are highly visible. They are advantageous over other standard types of promotional products like pens and mugs because of their size.

Think about the side of a tote bag as a blank painter's canvas on which to print your business logo. That canvas is spacious, meaning there's lots of room to display whatever advertising message you need to get across to your audience. You can use the ample space to its fullest potential by choosing large, bold print, bright colors and a captivating message.

Another benefit that sets the tote bag apart from other types of promotional products is value. They are among the most economical promotional products you can purchase. And since you have so much space to print your logo on, you get maximum value for your dollar on each individual bag.

Tote bags come in a number of styles and varieties, including:

* Traditional. These are typically square in shape and feature two carrying handles. They come in a variety of fabrics, both woven and non-woven, such as cotton, polyester and nylon. Traditional-style tote bags make an excellent choice for use as grocery or shopping bags, or to carry books or other small to medium size items.

* Boat-style. These are similar to traditional-style tote bags. Additionally, boat totes have bottom and side gussets. These extra panels allow for extra expansion. Boat totes are perfect for carrying larger and heavier loads.

* Duffel style. Duffel bags are barrel-shaped totes with two carrying handles. Many duffel totes also feature a shoulder strap in addition to handles for better weight distribution and easier carrying. Duffels are perfect for packing with sports equipment, gym clothes and tennis shoes. Plus, many duffel bags feature extra pockets both inside and out for smaller items like car keys, cell phones and credit cards.

* Backpacks and lunch totes. These are super choices when you want to target your advertising to students. Promotional backpacks are also great for travelers.

* Computer totes. Designed for storing and transporting laptop computers, these are always appreciated by business executives, office workers and college students. Computer totes make unique and memorable alternatives to traditional tote bags.

* Shoe bags. Golfers and athletes would be thrilled to receive a promotional shoe bag with your business logo. They're ideal for dashing from work to the golf course for a round or two.

* Beach totes. These bags are designed to resist water penetration and to clean easily by simply brushing off. They're the perfect way to transport towels, swim suits and beach toys to your favorite swimming hole.

Custom tote bags offer so much variety and versatility that you'll be able to find one that suits your needs, no matter what your type of business you're in or what your advertising goals are.
